Llandaff Diocese Pilot Schools

We’re pleased to announce the growth of our partnership with the Llandaff Diocese. We had initially agreed to partner with the Llandaff Diocese for the 22/23 academic year, training 20 facilitators within the diocese. However, once word of the Flourish Project spread within the Diocese, some The Church of Wales schools were keen to deliver the project within their school community. Therefore, we have expanded our partnership to add six pilot schools with two facilitators at each school fully trained to deliver the Flourish Project.

We expect these six pilot schools to deliver the Flourish Project with over 200 children and young people within the first year. Llandaff have opted to sign the six pilot schools to deliver the Flourish Project for two years, increasing the expected reach to well over 400 children and young people across two years.

One of our trained Facilitators Coral Lewis had this to say about the two days of training,

Such an amazing course, everybody was so welcoming and friendly. I loved how we all learnt about ourselves while planning and acting out the sessions. The steps are really easy so you can add your own flavour and be free with your sessions. I will ‘magpie’ ideas from the lessons today. I’ve learnt a lot that can help me to help others. 5 stars.’

Flourish Project Manager Philip Mann shares his thoughts on the pilot scheme.

‘We’re excited to welcome on board another six schools to deliver the Flourish Project. We know that pilot schemes like this one, are key for communities to see and experience first hand the impact the Flourish Project can have. I’m delighted that Llandaff Diocese have opted for the pilot scheme to be a two year commitment. This ensures, each of the schools the best opportunity to use the Flourish Project to its fullest and see children and young people’s mental and emotional well being improve and their self esteem and general levels of happiness increase.

It was a pleasure to train all twelve facilitators and we look forward to hearing all the good news stories and the impact the Flourish Project has had.’

Rebecca Morteo, Head of Education for Llandaff Diocese adds.

“As a diocese, we prioritise supporting wellbeing and mental health in our schools. When we heard about Flourish, we were keen to explore how a programme developed from Christian values could support wellbeing in our schools. The training has been a huge success with positive feedback from all staff. As we start to introduce Flourish through a two-year pilot across our schools, we have seen high levels of engagement and enthusiasm from staff, children and parents. We are looking forward to watching the impact and development of flourish in our pilot schools over the next two years.’

Children’s Mental Health Flourishes
With Edenstone Funding

HUNDREDS of children across 10 schools in South Wales have reported improved self-esteem, wellbeing and happiness after completing the Flourish Project, sponsored by the Edenstone Foundation.

Flourish is a Proton Foundation project designed to improve mental and emotional wellbeing, self-esteem and resilience amongst nine to 16-year-olds over the course of eight one-hour sessions.

During 2022, funding from the Edenstone Foundation provided training and resources for 10 new schools – Hengoed Primary School, Blackwood; St. Patrick’s RC Primary and St Michael’s R.C. Primary Schools in Newport; Cwmtawe Community School in Pontardawe, Swansea;  Victoria Primary, Penarth; Cwmffrwdoer Primary School, Pontnewynydd;  Archbishop Rowan Williams CiW, Monmouthshire; The Federation of Kymin View & Llandogo, Monmouth; plus  St Helen’s RC Primary School and Nant-y-Parc Primary School, Caerphilly.

The Edenstone Foundation funding has committed to two years’ funding for the project at a rate of around £30,000 a year.

Chris Edge, from the Edenstone Foundation, said,

“The funding we’ve provided has helped train 30 Flourish facilitators who’ve delivered the programme to 216 children so far. Feedback from schools is that it’s led to a 14.85% increase in self-esteem, a 13.05% improvement in mental and emotional wellbeing and a 13.31% average increase in general levels of happiness. The results speak for themselves – working with the Proton Foundation we’re helping make a real difference to young people’s lives now and in the future.”

One year five pupil, who took part in the project, said:

“I’ve enjoyed Flourish because we got to talk about what we enjoyed. We got to talk about our feelings and what we believe in. My favourite part was the elephant story because it showed us not to let people tell us we can’t do something. If you keep trying you will be able to.”

Another added:

“It was fun. We got to do activities in groups that changed our self-belief.”

Feedback from teachers has also been positive.

Kris Wharton, deputy head at Cwmffrwdoer Primary School, said,

“Children have absolutely loved every session. I have really noticed confidence and how they carry themselves at school and how they communicate with each other. A lot of the activities have also been taken to school assemblies. Children are using all the Flourish vocabulary they have picked up from the sessions in normal classes. It has been fantastic. I can see the improvement and see that the kids can see it too. We even got the children to do a session for the governors.”

Across the UK there are 32 Flourish Hubs. Edenstone Foundation funding accounts for more than 40% of them.

Thanks to the Edenstone Foundation, a further 184 children are due to take part in the project by the end of the summer term.

Flourish Project manager Philip Man said:

“At the Proton Foundation we are all too aware of the importance of partnership with the Edenstone Foundation. We know that alone we can only go so far, but together, we can have a larger and longer-lasting impact. Our partnership with the Edenstone Foundation is proof of this. We have seen over 200 children’s lives changed and expect many more to be changed in the future. We are so encouraged when reflecting on the impact we have had together so far, and are even more excited to see the impact our partnership will continue to have.”

The Edenstone Foundation funding for the project is fuelled by the success of the Edenstone Group’s two housing brands – Edenstone Homes and Bluebell Homes. It receives a proportion of the proceeds from every home the Group sells to support good causes.

Good News Stories

2022 Goals

We ended 2021 with some amazing stories of the impact that the Flourish Project made in the lives of children, teachers and parents.

Now 2 months into 2022, we have some big goals we would like to achieve to see this impact spread across thousands of lives!

We want to see 1500 children complete the project.
We want to see 12 schools become a hub.
We want to see 8 churches become a hub.

What impact do we want to see in the local community?

We want to see an increase in young people’s self-esteem, mental health, and resilience.

We want to see young people know that life is worth living and have hope for their future.

Thank you for supporting the Proton Foundation❤️

Without your encouragement and generosity, we wouldn’t receive these amazing testimonies and have faith to achieve our goals. Don’t forget to stay up to date with all our work by following our social media accounts.

Children’s Mental Health

Children’s Mental Health

Recently, BBC News released an article about the rise in the number of children needing specialist treatment for severe mental health crisis, especially as a result of the pandemic. Now more than ever, everyday conversations about mental health can help support children’s wellbeing.

BBC News: Children’s Mental Health

Our response to the above article:

“We are in a mental health pandemic of epic proportions. As an organisation who has worked alongside 1500 young people over the last 5 years, we have seen this evidence first hand. Schools are feeling overwhelmed and under resourced.

We, the ‘Flourish Project’, are seeing increases in self-harm, suicidal thoughts, low self-esteem, self-destructive behaviours, anxiety, the list could go on and on.

Everyone has a part to play in helping to tackle this crisis, we ‘society’ can no longer be spectators and say it’s not my problem. It is our problem and it is all around us. We need to look to solutions that can be put in place now…to stop this from spiralling further out of control.”

Everyone has a part to play in helping to tackle this crisis. Keep the conversations happening!

Christmas is fast approaching!

Christmas is Fast Approaching!

To so many, Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. A time where we gather with family and friends, exchange gifts, eat together and take some much needed rest from work, school and all round ‘real life’. A time where children are spoiled with gifts, chocolate, memories and fun.

Unfortunately, this time of year isn’t like this for everybody. For many of our children and young people across the UK, Christmas isn’t as joyful a picture as the John Lewis advert likes to paint.

As we begin to walk into 2022, almost 2 years since COVID-19 reared its ugly head on our shores, more than ever we’re counting the cost of a lack of mental and emotional well being in our children and young people. We’ve seen a worrying trend of a dramatic increase in self harming and suicide amongst our young people.

Perhaps this year the gift our children and young people truly need can’t be bought in a shop or online!

Perhaps what our children and young people need is long term investment — something that will help improve their mental and emotional well-being, increase their self esteem and resilience.

This Christmas, as a charity, we are fundraising to allow us to deliver the Flourish Project, in partnership with local churches, to schools in our local communities.

Our aim is to deliver the project to 30 young people within local schools across Central England and South Wales starting on the 11th January 2022.

For us to be able to do this, we need to raise £1650 to see 30 children complete the Flourish Project.

This festive season, we would love for you to partner with us in giving our children the gift of investment, identity, self esteem and help them improve their mental and emotional well being.

Give a give that will truly change lives!
